At Limestone the music department (instrumentalist) was heavily dominated by boys. I'm not really sure why it was this way but it was. Jazz band was very exciting there. The Jazz band was nothing but boys most years. I always believed that female musicians would add so much character to our ensembles.
I think it's interesting that I am achieving a Graduate degree at a school that's primarily for girls. It seems a little strange at times but at the end of the day Converse is simply awesome. A Converse College I get to feel like a true individual.and ounce again I am playing in a trumpet section with all girls.
I would also note that Converse College may have some productions related to gender. Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but perhaps the lack of brass players is why we don't have a Jazz Band. Also, we don't have a great deal of brass ensembles except the trumpet quartet that we just started. Could this be attributed to having a primarily female program? As a whole, the department seems to be steered toward a classical setting than a Jazz or Commercial setting. I would say that gender has played a major role in our musical output.
I found this blog very interesting, and I appreciate your candor! I would venture to agree with you that there is definitely a correlation between the types of music played/featured at Converse and the gender of the typical student. I do believe it to be a "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" type scenario, however...are there mainly classical pieces because females typically enjoy playing these pieces, or does Converse's heavy focus on classical music further the female domination of the classical arena?? food for thought.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog. I think I have had similar experiences. In highschool the band was mostly male, especially the brass sections. Girls would join band just because they wanted to do colorguard. In college at Stetson University I noticed that the instrumentalists in the music school were mostly male, while the vocalists were moslty female. I'm sure it is not like that everywhere or all the time, but it was that way when I was there. I also can agree with your thoughts about females being attracted to lyrical instruments or parts.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of Jazz band but I'm pretty sure this year Converse has the biggest saxophone section that they have ever had. (that are actually students) It is hard to have a jazz band without saxophones. It would just be weird. That is likely why it has not happened. Also, It seems like the school is focused more on string ensembles than other instrumental ensembles. I know they are trying to get more small ensembles its just hard to fit in people's schedules.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great blog! I believe you're right. If we had a bigger brass section, we probably could have a jazz band. I really do wish Converse could have a jazz band. That would be so awesome. Something different and out of the comfort zone : )
ReplyDeletewe don't have a jazz band because it is not the norm at converse college, we are a classical centered school. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a jazz band, i really miss it!! but what i'm saying is the lack of jazz band is NOT due to it being an all girls school, its due to the fact that we are a classical setting school. Oh, and probably because Lindahl just doesn't seem to care for jazz LOL because i have tried to play some jazz on my jury and he told me NO
