This is called "Scotland the Brave". It's a great example of the bagpipes. This piece came close to being set as the National Anthem in Scotland.

I actually mentioned this in my final paper. It's a replica of The "Queen Mary harp". It's a great example of the clarsach. Since I didn't show a visual example of the clarsach in class, I figured this would be appropriate for this.

Here is another example of Scottish folk music. This is a group of performers at a festival. I didn't mention percussion in my paper or presentation so here is some percussion and bagpipe music.

Things pertaining to the course
1. I must say that the class as a whole has been interesting. It's difficult to say what I found most interesting in the course. I particularly enjoyed learning about Native American culture. I found it interesting that Native American culture is so similar to other culture in terms of style. Native American culture, African culture and many others are extremely repetitive and contain little notation.
2. In comparing our culture to others, it seems that Western music is so much more complicated than some of the others that we heard throughout the class. Maybe it's just me, but our system of harmony and temperament seem more complicated.
3. As I worked on my presentation and final paper, I found the music of Scotland intriguing. Since I only concentrated on the instruments, it would be cool to learn more about vocal music as well as today's popular music of Scotland.

At least Western Art music is complicated in a different way. We like to focus on harmony and certainly have more complications in that area of music, but some of the African drumming traditions seem rhythmically very complicated. India has its own complex system of melody and rhythm, with its theories of ragas and talas. Perhaps some of our complication stems from our custom of music being main event of concerts and from our emphasis on pre-composed, practiced pieces such that we can put in and practice all the complication we want in a piece or song.
ReplyDeleteI love scottish music. Bagpipes are wonderful. I own the entire soundtrack for the movie Braveheart just because no one can tease me for it...its Braveheart! haha
ReplyDeleteI agree western music is more complicated, but there's also beauty in simplicity. I've read approx. 10 blogs and I find it fascinating that a good bit of us like the Native American music, as well as the religion aspect of the cultures. I find your comments to be very thoughtful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI do agree harmony is complicated but we may think that also harmony is complicated because we are educated more about it. It's like those things where the more I see the less I know kind of thing? I think melody and rhythm are complicated in their own ways. In America, we primarily focus on harmony but not on melody and rhythm. So this is kind of an interesting way to look at the Western music because I think all music around the globe are all complicated in their own way.. =D
